Christmas gifts for ex-charges and families

It’s that time of year when we’re making lists, just like Santa. Family, friends, employers, current charges…. The list for a nanny is long! We’re not going to come down one way or the other but here are some tips so you don’t get sucked into spending hundreds for all your ex-charges.

  1. Don’t be afraid to set limits. A cut off age is perfectly reasonable.
  2. Suggest spending time together, rather than a gift. Remember it’s presence, not presents, and the gift of your time will be doubly precious for your ex-charge who doesn’t see you every day any more.
  3. It’s okay to have favourites. It’s okay to want to keep sending gifts to your first nanny family, or the one you spent the longest with, or ones that you keep in touch with. It’s unlikely that anyone except you will ever know.
  4. You don’t have to give a gift, but it’s always nice to send a card to your past families.
