{"id":280,"date":"2012-03-20T11:45:12","date_gmt":"2012-03-20T11:45:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nannyjob.co.uk\/blog\/?p=280"},"modified":"2012-03-20T11:45:12","modified_gmt":"2012-03-20T11:45:12","slug":"nanny-contract-why-and-how","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nannyjob.co.uk\/blog\/nanny-contract-why-and-how\/","title":{"rendered":"Nanny Contract: Why and How"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When you hire a nanny, you become an employer.\u00a0 And as an employer, you will need to provide your nanny with a contract detailing important information about her responsibilities as your employee, and your responsibilities as her employer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why Do We Need a Written Contract?<\/strong><br \/>\nVerbal agreements are legally binding, but they are open to interpretation.\u00a0 Furthermore, providing a written contract shows that you take your responsibilities as her employer seriously, and that is important.\u00a0 Feeling valued is a big part of being a happy nanny \u2013 and happy nannies are usually great nannies.<\/p>\n<p>Employment law will protect both of you regardless of whether or not you have a nanny contract in place, but a contract is personal to your own circumstances.\u00a0 Employment law covers the basics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Should be Covered in a Nanny Contract?<\/strong><br \/>\nThere are two schools of thought here.\u00a0 Some believe that a nanny contract should be extensive, covering things like duties and house rules (if the nanny is live-in).\u00a0 Others say that the contract should cover the basics, and that the details of day-to-day tasks and responsibilities should be covered in a separate job description document.\u00a0 Either way, your nanny contract should always include the following points:<\/p>\n<p>Your name and the nanny\u2019s name<br \/>\nPlace of work<br \/>\nStart date (and end date, if the nanny is filling a temporary position such as maternity leave)<br \/>\nJob title<br \/>\nWeekly working hours<br \/>\nDetails of the nanny\u2019s salary \u2013 including when and how often she will be paid<br \/>\nDetails of the nanny\u2019s holiday entitlement<br \/>\nDetails of the nanny\u2019s sick leave entitlement<br \/>\nDetails of the nanny\u2019s pension (if there is no pension plan, this should be stated)<br \/>\nNotice period<br \/>\nProbation\/trial period (if there is one)<br \/>\nInformation on disciplinary procedures<br \/>\nDetails of sackable offences.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How Can I Be Sure Our Contract is Legally Satisfactory?<\/strong><br \/>\nIf you use a nanny agency to hire your nanny, they will be able to provide you with a sample contract that you can amend as necessary.\u00a0 If you wish to create your own contract from scratch, it may be a wise idea to seek advice from a professional.<\/p>\n<p>The nanny contract should, ideally, be drawn up and signed by both parties (and the nanny provided with a copy) before the nanny starts work.\u00a0 In any case, the contract should always be dealt with within one or two months of the nanny\u2019s employment start date.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What If We Want to Change the Contract?<\/strong><br \/>\nIf you and your nanny wish to change any terms on your nanny contract, you are free to do so at any time.\u00a0 A new contract should be drawn up and signed by both parties, making the old contract obsolete.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When you hire a nanny, you become an employer.&#49824; And as an employer, you will need to provide your nanny with a contract detailing important information about her responsibilities as your employee, and your responsibilities as her employer.
