{"id":276,"date":"2012-03-14T13:30:35","date_gmt":"2012-03-14T13:30:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nannyjob.co.uk\/blog\/?p=276"},"modified":"2012-03-14T13:30:35","modified_gmt":"2012-03-14T13:30:35","slug":"babysitting-jobs-what-to-expect","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nannyjob.co.uk\/blog\/babysitting-jobs-what-to-expect\/","title":{"rendered":"Babysitting Jobs: What to Expect"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you are new to babysitting jobs, you may be nervous about what to expect when you turn up at the home of a new family.\u00a0 Even if you have had childcare experience before, you could be worried about bonding with the children, trying to carry out the parents\u2019 wishes and keeping the children happy at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re about to start venturing into the world of babysitting jobs, this article may be able to help you.\u00a0 Following are some of the challenges that babysitters face, and tips on how to deal with them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Unhappy Children<\/strong><br \/>\nIt\u2019s very possible that the children in your care may become upset when the parents leave, or they may begin to miss them later on.\u00a0 The best way to deal with this is to allow them to express their feelings and empathise with them \u2013 telling them that you understand their upset, and that you promise to keep them safe, will go a long way.\u00a0 Resist the urge to distract them out of their upset.\u00a0 Offer activities to do, by all means, but trying to \u2018cheer them up\u2019 constantly will only make them feel as though their feelings don\u2019t matter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Unruly Children<\/strong><br \/>\nSome children deal with their difficult feelings by behaving in an unruly manner.\u00a0 They might refuse to eat the food their parents have left, insist that their mum said they could stay up late, or refuse point blank to go to bed.\u00a0 Some babysitters can feel that the children are \u2018ganging up\u2019 on them, and testing their authority.\u00a0 This may well be the case.<\/p>\n<p>The most important thing to do is to stay calm and light-hearted.\u00a0 If the children see that they are rattling you, their behaviour may well continue.\u00a0 Make sure you are absolutely clear on the rules before the parents leave \u2013 for example, what time the children should be in bed, or how much TV they are allowed to watch \u2013 so that if they try to tell you otherwise, you won\u2019t be swayed.\u00a0 The parents will much prefer you ask them the same thing three times before they leave than to deal with a call from you at 9pm, asking you to clarify bedtime.\u00a0 Write down the information so you have it to hand.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Emergency Situations<\/strong><br \/>\nThankfully, emergency situations are not common situations to have to deal with at babysitting jobs, but you should still be prepared:<br \/>\nHave a list of emergency contact numbers available \u2013 the parents mobile numbers, the numbers of the children\u2019s grandparents, and one other contact number of someone close to the children, just in case<br \/>\nBe sure to have enough spare change on you to pay for a taxi should you need to use one in an emergency<br \/>\nTake your mobile phone with you, and make sure you have credit (and a fully charged battery)<br \/>\nBe prepared to use first aid.\u00a0 Attend a paediatric first aid course prior to your first babysitting job if you can \u2013 if not, seek first aid tutorial videos from a reputable source online on common problems such as choking and resuscitation, and take a real first aid course as soon as possible.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you are new to babysitting jobs, you may be nervous about what to expect when you turn up at the home of a new family.&#49824;
