A far cry from now, Pam Weaver’s memoirs talk about her first job as a nursery assistant in a children’s home, her training and post-qualifying experience as a nursery nurse there and then her time as a private nanny, stints as a maternity nurse and her training on a neonatal unit.

What we loved

The detail. Pam has an eye for detail and you really see life as she experienced it. You can even see the colour schemes in your mind’s eye and visualise the rooms she worked in.

The honesty. Nursery nurse training wasn’t a bed of roses and Pam shows you the good and the bad. Pam holds a mirror up to herself and you can peek over her shoulder. Just reading this book you get a sense of how life in a children’s home was for children and how a maternity ward years ago compares to working on a maternity ward today

The humour. Although some of the situations Pam describes are bleak and it’s hard to imagine children separated from their parents or abandoned Pam manages to find the little moments of brightness, and recounts several amusing little anecdotes that anyone who works with children will appreciate.

Get a copy in our Facebook giveaway, ending 9 July, or find it on Amazon

Ever wondered what NNEB training was like 50 years ago?
