Useful Lessons Parents Can Learn from a Nanny

Most nannies have many years more experience in childcare than their employers, which means that alongside looking after the children in their care, parents are often able to learn childcare tips and practices from nannies that can help with looking after their own children.

We’ve put together a list of some of the most valuable lessons that parents can learn from their nannies:

  • Boredom Sparks Trouble – Boredom, whilst good for creativity can also be a contributing factor where mischief is concerned. To avoid bad behaviour, plenty of distracting activities are key.
  • Repetition Works – If children are particularly young, it’s best to repeat instructions, questions, phrases and words several times throughout the day so that they can be absorbed.
  • Set Clear Boundaries – Explain and show children how you expect them to behave. Remember that children don’t instinctually know what good behaviour looks like.
  • Dirt is Fun – It might be messy, but kids love playing outside in the mud and sand or with things like paint or clay. The happiest children are those who are allowed to express their creativity and make a mess alongside a nanny or parent.
  • Don’t Give in to a Tantrum – Dealing with tantrums can be hard work, but the worst thing that you can do is give in to a screaming child’s demands to make the tantrum stop. This will only encourage their behaviour and can cause long-term problems.
  • Go with the Flow – Whilst routines and schedules are encouraged, things can often go awry when children are involved. It’s important not to stress too much about sticking to the plan and learn to let go.
  • Routines Work – Routines help children feel safe and secure whilst also aiding with development issues such as sleep and mealtimes.
  • Be Positive – Reinforce positive behaviour, even something as simple as a sticker can work wonders to help teach your child what behaviour is expected.
  • Yelling is Pointless – Raising your voice only results in a shouting match that can leave both parent and child feeling miserable and tired. It’s best to remain calm and firm to show your child that tantrums won’t be rewarded.
  • Outings are Tough but Worth It – The idea of getting together everything you need to take children out for the day, especially younger children can seem exhausting and can often put parents off the idea altogether. However, it’s important to focus on the positives to be gained from these experiences and how much children will learn from experiencing new things and interacting in new situations and with new people.
