5 Quiet Alternatives to Screen-Time

“Screen time is bad for your children!” It seems as though that’s all we’re hearing in the news lately. Whilst research is still being conducted into the full effects of screen-time on young children, here are 5 alternatives for when you and your child need a little quiet time instead of turning to the TV, tablet or games console.

  1. Reading – Is there anything better than a good book. Whether reading together or alone, books help to inspire children’s imaginations and encourage creativity.
  2. Crafts – Give a child a box of paper, glue, googly eyes and pipe cleaners and you can easily lose them to a world of creativity. The more materials you can provide, the better. This activity is perfect for those times when you need a break, so sit back, put your feet up and marvel at your child’s creations.
  3. Board Games – Board games were all the rage a few years ago, but they seem to have lost popularity in the face of video games. Board games are a great group activity to get everyone involved! If you don’t have any board games to hand, how about trying a few card games? Snap is always a favourite of young children!
  4. Audiobook – If you’re too busy to read to your young children or your child needs a little alone time, try playing an audiobook. Audiobooks are fantastic for children. They’ll be transported into the story whilst listening to the narrator’s different character voices.
  5. Yoga – Yoga is a great activity to reduce stress and encourage mindfulness in children (and adults too). It doesn’t need to be difficult either, just play some relaxing music and try a few simple yoga poses for children.

What are your favourite quiet-time activities?
